3May be a great watch but there are "issues" with buying one through AmazonNov 29, 2011
By D. Denholm "Salem Design"
I bought this watch through Amazon.

As usual (I buy quite a lot things through Amazon), the item arrived quickly.

I opened the snazzy Victorinox box and found the watch. It was a bit bigger and heavier than I expected but looked great.

With all previous electronic watches I have bought, they were shipped with the winding/setting stem pulled out. I always imagined that this was to disengage the mechanism from the battery while the watch was not in use. One then set the watch, pushed in the stem/crown and the thing would start ticking.

In this case, the stem was already pushed in but the watch was not ticking. I read the manual to see if there was something special I needed to do to get the watch to run but I could not find anything. I did notice while readying the manual that it was clearly intended for a watch sold in the European market, not the US.

[I have reached the conclusion that this watch is what is called a "gray market" watch sold outside of Victorinox' normal sales channels. This is consistent with the fact that Amazon states that the watch may not be covered by the manufacturer's warranty and offers an Amazon warranty instead.]

At this point, I called the special Amazon help line to see if they had any suggestions. The woman I spoke with did not seem very surprised that the watch did not function and offered to send me a replacement and gave me a link to a get a RMA shipping label that would allow me to return the original watch via UPS at no charge.

So that's what I did, I shipped the original watch back and waited for the replacement.

The replacement arrived, it looked fine but and this one was ticking... After a fashion. The second hand was stuttering around the dial, jumping ahead several seconds at a time and then slowing down, and then jumping ahead. From reading the manual, I gathered that this was expected behavior if the battery was nearly dead... Designed to warn the wearer that it is time to replace the battery.

But I thought I was buying a new watch with, I would expect, a new battery.

I called the Amazon watch hotline and, again, they were very helpful and completely unsurprised at the fact that the battery in a supposedly new watch would be at the end of its useful life. [In my experience, a watch battery lasts 12 to 18 months.]

The Amazon Customer Support person said I could take the watch to a local watch repair place and have the battery replaced at Amazon's expense but at this point I had got a bit spooked and decided to just return the second watch for a credit. Again, the Amazon CS person arranged for this very efficiently and I returned the watch.

My impression is that Amazon is selling genuine but gray market watches and, in the case of both the watches I received, watches that were either returns or demo models. I now suspect the first watch was perfectly functional... It just had a totally dead battery while the second watch just had an almost dead battery.

It is perfectly reasonable for Amazon to sell watches like this but I think they should make it clear that this is the case so that the customer can decide if they want to put up with the potential hassles of getting a DOA watch and have to deal with replacing the battery before the thing will work.

5Great WatchMay 07, 2012
By erik
I bought this watch from Macy's, cause I didn't want to have it get messed up from shipping or any other unforseen issues. It is beautiful, very nice and subtle, which I like. It's not too flashy and doesn't stick out like a sore thumb, but when you notice it, you notice it more and more. It has a good solid feel and seems sturdy. The stainless steel wrist band is well made and doesn't grab my arm hair as bad as most metal ones do. The second hand lines up perfectly with the minute markers, all the way around the dial. It's a clean, professional looking watch. Looks good with everything. Keeps very accurate time so far and you can set the date without having to stop the time, a great feature. The crown also feels very solid. The saphire crystal has resisted all potential scratches so far too, as it should.

4Dead On ArrivalMar 08, 2012
By Emrob13
241360 Officers Gent Watch arrived with what I assume is a dead battery. Amazon only offered full refund, no other options via online return choices or via Customer Service interaction. I was hoping to take it to an authorized dealer to see if it was just the battery. I'll take the refund and shop elsewhere.

The watch is really nice, has heft to it but not too heavy, and has a dial that will fit a medium-sized wrist. Very easy to read the time due to size and contrast of the hour markers and hands. The date isn't as easy to read but is large enough for my eyes and taste.

4Beautiful watchFeb 25, 2012
By P.
Just got this through Amazon, so I can't comment yet on the accuracy of the timepiece (tho after four days it hasn't even lost a second), but the watch itself is quite attractive. The numbers are silver-toned, slightly raised and highly reflective, and the watchband trim also has highly polished silver accents, so it's a looker and not the sort of watch that'll easily blend into the rest of your wardrobe. However, the blue face is a muted tone, so it's not as flashy as other models. It's a large-ish face, but not ridiculously so, and while it has some heft, it doesn't feel appreciably heavier than the Bulova 96B104 model Bulova Men's 96B104 Strap Silver Dial Watchit has replaced for now. I had to have the band adjusted at a jeweler, but that's to be expected with metal bands unless your wrists are rather large. (I had 1 1/2 links removed; the half-link option is welcome and makes for a cleaner fitting.) The clasp is unusual, but works just fine.

One quibble that knocked a star off the rating: The watch arrived with the stem closed and the time running--a big no-no, because there is no way to tell how long it has been running and how much the battery has been drained. This complaint was addressed by Amazon customer service, which as always does a great job. So for now, no problems, and very happy with this watch at this price point. Track the price closely, it has sold as high as $300+, and as low as $173. I grabbed mine on the low end of that scale, and very pleased so far.

5Victorinox serial number missing in the pictureMay 21, 2012
By cmcsev
Well, I bought this watch very cheap not on Amazon but my local big box fashion store. However, looking at the picture on amazon this watch serial number is missing(you can see is grayed out on this picture) I really like the watch and want to buy another for my father but I don't want to pay 400 dollars and up in my local jewelry. I wonder if anyone received this watch with the serial number missing? I have 100 percent confidence buying from Amazon (only) so it seems a bit strange that Amazon would remove the serial number from such a nice timepiece. I have read up about gray market watches rule of thumb when it comes down to protect the "Authorized dealer" In case the manufacture would want to trace back the watch. However, thinking like a lawyer tells me having a timepiece with the serial number removed or defaced is a big no no in the U.S. Keep in mind the watch deserve 5 stars as long as the watch is new and the serial number is not missing. I did not bought this watch from amazon but from an Authorized Dealer.
