5Quinticential pocket knife-Fantastic!Jul 07, 2008
By Little Joey "Blackdog"
I have owned various incarnations of Victorinox Swiss Army knives for almost 3 decades. I think I am on my fourth now. Two lost and one given away. It lives in the pocket of my jeans every single day.
They change the model names and features around from year to year.
The Explorer is my current favorite and is essentially THE knife I have owned for all these years.
One of the major qualifying elements for me is the Phillips Head screwdriver, which I use regularly. Many of victorinox's models have this screwdriver coming out of the handle perpandicular to the handle's length. Which seems absolutely ridiculous. It's very awkard to use effectively in that configuration. Much better when it comes straight off the end of the handle, as a typical screwdriver does.

So that's what I look for first. The large knife blades, small knife blade is great. The scissors are great...more than a gimmick. I use them frequently. (Be careful not to overbend the spring when "adjusting"...although you can get replacements. I replaced mine in Rome several years ago at a tiny knife shop)
I use the magnifying glass as well...for a whole bunch of stuff. And more so now that my eyes are starting to go!
Essentially, everything on here has a purpose and is useful in my daily life, with the exception perhaps, of the fence-wire-puller thingy. It is a reasonable size and weight. No extra wood camping saw or chainsaw or anything else that's only going to get use once a year.
Manufacturing quality and finish on these are great. As they say, "Don't be fooled by imitations".
Perfect knife: Great features, nothing extraneous, good weight, great quality, and great price.
Don't lose it and you'll have it for the rest of your life.

4A good value if purchased as a comboJul 03, 2008
By Eric H. Lee
The price for this one is pretty good if you purchase it with another knife to get free shipping. Can't say much about the Explorer - its a nice little knife. The shield case looks metal, but is cheap plastic. I could have done without it.

3explorer swiss army knifeDec 14, 2011

The knife arrived with a scratched up plastic handle, which makes it look like a second hand product. It is likely that the scratches on the red plastic handle comes from the case in which the knife is loosely packed. The case is an unnecessary accoutrement which needlessly adds to the cost and which is likely never to be used. But it is the loosely packed knife which bangs against the case, probably during transit, which is what causes the scratches.

4Great value item!Dec 04, 2010
By QueenR
It's a pretty good item with this price, specially with the collectible gift box. However the box is plastic (I thought it was metal at the beginning) and when I received it, it's a little bit different from the pictures that showed by the seller. Mine is a red box with a silver cross on it, I would like the other color better.
Other than that, it's a great tool and a great gift.

5For when your boy becomes a manSep 07, 2009
By Lady Lawyer
After checking with his parents and a great deal of cautionary instruction, I gave this to my godson for his 12th birthday. At the birthday party, men of three generations examined the knife with the boy and taught him how to use the various tools. This was particularly great because they all had stories connected to a Swiss Army knife that they shared, which might not have been told but for this perennial of common experience. Of course, I would not recommend this as a gift for just any 12-year-old boy. But for this boy, it served as a marker of maturity that was earned and appreciated.
