5Just about perfectMar 26, 2011
By Frank Luo
I am a knife snob.

I spend ridiculous amounts of money on my knives and even more ridiculous amounts of money on sharpening equipment. I buy knives that are as hard as 66 on the Rockwell scale (they exist... Look them up) and sharpen them with hundreds of dollars of stones until I would not hesitate to shave my face with any of them.

One little problem: when knives are that good and that sharp, they have a tendency to cut through stuff you didn't mean to cut through. This includes BladeSafe, EdgeGuard and all other such blade protectors. When they don't cut through such protectors, there is still a tendency for either the protectors or the knives to be damaged because, regardless of which protective shells you use, the knives WILL move around inside of them. And with EdgeGuard type protectors, the knife will slip out of them very easily, especially the thin-bladed Japanese knives.

This one is different.

The magnetic strips -- both sides of this protector, which opens up like a butterfly, are magnetic. Either side will stick easily to the side of a knife fairly securely. Once closed and with both sides in place, the knife is very securely held by magnets that touch the entire sides of the blades, plus the little bits left over, where the magnets on the two sides hold to each other. This means that there will generally speaking be no movement whatsoever of the blade, so that I would not hesitate to stick the knife in my drawer or even backpack.

One other thing about the butterfly construction is that, wherever you you place the blade, the magnetic strips will hold it in place. This is unlike any other protectors, allowing you to leave plenty of clearance between the edge and the side of the protector. You can't really see it on the photo but the two flaps are slightly asymmetrical -- holding the flat end away from you the way it is shown in the photo, the right flap has a small protruded ridge about 1/4" wide running along the bottom, along the joint and for the length of the thing, while the left has an indentation of the same size so that it closes flat. This is so that when you place the blade on the magnet above this protrusion, it doesn't even hit the piece of plastic fabric holding the two flaps together. With other protectors, you stick the knife in, something clicks in place, and the knife will be left with some play, so that the edge WILL bang against the side of the protector at some point, which will result either in damage or at least wear to either the protector or the edge.

The magnetic strips are soft -- it's that type of rubber-like plastic magnetic strip that you can cut with scissors if you wanted to customize it. They will NOT scratch your knives. They are even dishwasher safe.

One hint: you should wash and dry both the knives and the protectors before you put your knives away in them, because, being that the protector director contacts the blade, moisture will not evaporate readily when the thing is closed. This means you will have water spots on the knife even if your knife is stainless. If you left dirt -- food particles, for example -- on the magnetic strip, it may leave marks on them. No one sees the insides but you, but I don't want dirty spots on something that touches what touches my food.

But for what it's designed for, it is absolutely perfect. Be careful to use the thing the way it was intended to, by opening the thing, laying the blade flat against one magnetic strip so that it is where you wanted it (leaving 1/8" to 1/4" or so of clearance between the edge and the side of the protector, THEN close the other side over it. Don't try to snap both sides over the blade in one stroke, because you will likely cut the thing up, if you don't hurt yourself.

This product is just about perfect and superior to all other knife protectors I've used, including the wooden sayas. If it's not working for you, you're probably using it wrong. I only wish that they made these in more sizes and widths, because I would very much like to use these for my cleavers and slicers as well. It would also be nice if the connection between the two pieces was sturdier, but it is not enough to dock a whole star for.

Get these. You'll be glad you did.

4Great concept and works well, but a bit flimsyMar 27, 2010

I just got this set of four different-sized magnetic knife protectors. The concept is GREAT and works much better than the standard paper/plastic cover or even the Victorinox hard-plastic encasements (Victorinox Cutlery BladeSafe for 6-Inch to 8-Inch Knife Blades), which I also have. The protectors are easy to use and put on/off, and have more 'buffer' to accommodate multiple blade sizes than the other types of protectors. The knives feel super secure when encased in these protectors.

On the downside, the magnetic pieces are held together by flimsy plastic tape 'hinges' that aren't attached well (on my units, anyway), so they are loose and wrinkled and crinkle each time I open and close them.

It may be that these tape hinges are going to detach or rip over time, not sure. But for the price, probably worth tolerating.

It would be great if Victorinox would come out with a higher end version of these, maybe hinged with thin stainless steel or at least hard plastic - I'd definitely pay more for that.

I you have Victorinox knives then these magnetic blade protectors are amazing. Don't wash them with hot water though. I use them daily after cutting the hell out of my finger on my knife roll and have never had an accident since. The safest way you can carry knives.

5Very SecureSep 20, 2010

Works very well and you can feel comfortable with the safety of your knife. Fits the Henckels and Wusthof knives I have and can be trimmed if you like a more custom fit. Needed them for an intro to cooking class for my 8" Chefs. Didn't want to invest in a knife roll. A Craftsman plastic small truck box and my knives were safely secured. Think the multi set is the best. Recommended by our instructor by the way.

3Alright BUT....Sep 19, 2010

This edge protectors do their job and do it well but they seem to have left a very nasty rust stain on some of my knives and thusly i have stopped using them, and have replaced them with different edge protectors from WUstof.
