Great build quality and convenient tools.Jun 23, 2010
By R. Adams I've owned a Leatherman Wave for a while and started looking at the Swiss Army Swisstool Spirit X after purchasing a couple of Victorinox Swiss Army knives. I was really impressed with the fit and finish of the knives at such attractive prices. The Swisstool costs a heck of a lot more than the SAK's I've owned so it took some reading of reviews and watching some YouTube videos to make the plunge.
I'm really glad I purchased the Spirit X. The knife is actually a bit longer than my Leatherman Wave but it has a much smaller case made of leather-like material that has a great fit and finish. The tool feels very solid, has the perfect compliment of tools available and simply is more enjoyable to use than my Leatherman.
The locking mechanism is cleverly designed and is non-obtrusive to use in practice. This tool will definitely be traveling with me when out in the backcountry, horseback riding, or even out for a long hike nearby.
Highly recommended.

excellent multi-tool!!!!!Feb 19, 2011
By nelekona415 This is a great multi-tool! i've used gerbers, leathermans, etc. but this is the best.
it's either my everyday carry multi or in my bug out bag... the fit and finish are top notch. after two months of use here's my thoughts...
Pros: tools- well made and locking when in use (you don't want to have one fold up and injure yourself) pliers- can double as tweezers chisel point- can scrape anything or around camp you can do camp craft much easier and fine detailed... file- is good enough to remove burrs and and potential splinters scissors- are sharp and have a tight action (wife always uses them...) knife- i picked the X model because the knife isn't serrated and thus easier to sharpen (i carry the Fallkniven F1 for daily chores, and A1 for my BOB...)
Cons: sheath- is good quality and tight fitting, but i got the rotating sheath that i can put on/off my belt using the clip (without dropping my pants) if you need more tools or other specific types then Victorinox has other models... can't find any faults or cons...
if i need more tools i carry them in my bob or in my car or toolbox...
a multi-tool should be well made, reliable, and balance the fine line between weight, form, and function (the Spirit X does this excellently!) (which also meets the criteria for my edc and bob items)
i'm also a professional gardener and the tools are great for changing sprinklers, adjusting nozzles, clearing out valves, etc...
the Spirit X would make a great gift item (i'm getting one for my wife)
...i love my Spirit X she's a beauty and wouldn't go anywhere without it...

Victorinox Swisstool XNov 16, 2010
By Hitthespot I purchased this Multi-tool based on reading different opinions on a Knife Forum. It is usually rated very high with people who actually have purchased and used Victorinox's version of a non-knife based Multi-Tool.
I have had and been using this item for over two months now. I must also admit I am very pleased with this tool. It is well made. Fit and finish, quality of the tools, type of tools supplied, all seem top notch. I was so pleased with the Spirit X I went and also purchased the regular Spirit. The only difference between the two is the blade supplied. The Spirit X has the Regular knife and the Spirit has a Serated Blade.
I am positive these two Multi-Tools will last me a lifetime and I believe anyone looking for a Multi-Tool would be pleased with the Victorinox Brand.

Comparo w/Swiss Tool XNov 20, 2011
By John A. Lefcourte I just lost my Swiss Tool X and bought this as an alternative. Differences? The Spirit is lighter (7 oz v. 10 oz) and that is reflected in some of the tools: the scissors are a little smaller, and the file and saw blades are narrower. The other tools look the same. The handles of the Spirit are curved so if you use the pliers a lot it will be more comfortable. If you need a ruler or use the saw and file blades frequently then you'll want the Swiss Tool X. The Spirit has a pleather case with a Velcro closure. The Swiss Tool X has a Cordura case with a snap closure. I like Cordura better but I found that from the start the snap did not stay snapped so I appreciate the Velcro, but I know that, eventually, it will lose its grip. Both tools are beautifully constructed of top grade steel.

Victorinox Spirit X ReviewNov 07, 2011
By The Mountaineer There's alot to like about the Victorinox Spirit X and a few things I don't,I guess it depends on who you are really...but by no means is the Spirit X a bad multi-tool.I've been waiting a little over twenty years to see Victorinox make an actual multi-tool because I've just never liked thier knives.Let's be honest they're great for camping or backpack use but they couldn't stand up to the word durability, but the new alox handle models are an improvement :).Anyways the Victorinox Spirit X comes in high-polished stainless steel entirely which is a major plus being that's it very resistant,a little oil occassionally keeps it in nice shape. The tool locks I see as a expensive kind being that each tool has individual springs versus other manufacturers designs. The locks are located on the handle face and have a silky smooth action:frankly the locks are nice and I understand that's what Victorinox needed to make this design possible but I see it as a little overkill just like a Leatherman Pulse which in all respect was a cool design but normally handle-face locks are best suited for one-handed operation multi-tools like a Gerber Flik for safety use.The tools are precision crafted with a top-notch fit and finish and are intended for the functions they claim with no dissapointments.I will comment on the scissors and knife though. The scissors are a little short but they work flawlessly, scissors are actually something I've never seen as demanding to have but they come in handy. The knife is where I was a tad dissapointed:the knife is a camper's blade:it's good for cutting food, cutting open blister packs, and general knife use but it does make a lousy hunting blade.I remember a few times forgetting my pocket knife and my Leatherman clip-point came in real handy for cleaning small game,a real shame too because the Victorinox Spirit X is certainly built for exposure to the elements but for anything else it does the trick. Here's where the harshness creeps in-the pliers...I wish they were more defined. The pliers have a rounded off tip rather than a needle-nose with two-different sized hard-wire notches with a small soft wire cutter section. So I'm going to compare three multi-tool manufacturers pliers so you have a good idea of what your'e getting into....
1.Victorinox-I'll confess I'm not crazy about the plier-head being that the pliers aren't fine pointed.I think fine pointed pliers do make great options for assembling/disassembling small objects and very detailed use. These pliers will work but in a somewhat clumsy fashion. But these pliers are built tougher than a Leatherman.
2.Gerber-The toughest plier design ever made.Gerber pliers may not be as attractive as a Leatherman but they perform better and are practically a true hardware tool.Gerber pliers have no hard-wire notches and don't need them because they cut through wire with little effort.Look to the newer models for a finer needlenose point.
3.Leatherman-Very nice needlenose pliers with a hard-wire notch and generous wire cutter section, but they're medium duty at best except for the Super Tool models. The pliers are great for working with small parts,hobbies/crafts,hunting/fishing,or light repairs.
So in my personal opinion I think the Victorinox pliers are a coin-toss,like I said they lack definition but they are useful...so pick your poison. The external access of the tools is promising:sure it's not one-handed access, but the tools have an arch to them to be flush with the handles so your nail-nicks protrude from the handles so you don't have move this and that to access what you need...smart thinking Victorinox. The Spirit X does come with an attractive brown leather sheath with a velcro flap.I did ponder the switch-out of a button for velcro but it made sense being the button end could scratch the finish during transport, another smart move by Victorinox...if this thing gets scars it should be done by the user not the postal service.
Conclusion:The Victorinox Spirit X is without question the finest made multi-tool I've ever owned and I'm glad I bought it.I especially like the arched handle design which seemed odd at first but it makes the tool unfolded look like a natural pair of hardware pliers which I've seen on some Gerber products as well...it's a neat approach. It's got it's few things that make it less universal for my needs but it's certainly earned it's place as a dedicated camping/hiking multi-tool and it's very sturdy. It is a tad overpriced but I imagine the very high quality has alot to do with it,but with the lifetime warranty how can you go wrong? In my opinion take a minute and observe each tool and determine if it suits your needs because it isn't made cheap...but doesn't cost cheaply either.
